Thu, May 23rd 2024 at 2:42 PMThe state of Alabama officially purchased the bridge for $57 million and dropped the tolls at noon."It's historic because the last time there was a toll removed in Alabama was back in 1973," said James Gordon with ALDOT.
"As the governor says, this is in the best interest of the people of Alabama," says Neal Belitsky, the president of the Baldwin County Bridge Company. "We have 35 people that are basically not gonna be with us after today and about five people who will be with us the rest of the day," he said. "It's a bittersweet day for all of us."By mid-June, the toll plaza will be completely demolished amid additional work on a new bridge to further alleviate traffic to and from the coast.
