Shelters are striving to minimize euthanasia rates by promoting adoption campaigns, spaying and neutering programs, and behavior rehabilitation.According to the ASPCA, of the 920,000 shelter animals euthanized every year, at least 390,000 are dogs and 530,000 are cats. Thanks to a rise in shelter adoptions, the number has declined from approximately 2.6 million in 2011.
