The King spoke of the 'eternal debt' we owe veterans at a D-Day event in Portsmouth today ahead of tomorrow's anniversary - as the Queen became emotional as veterans recounted their experiences on the day of the invasion 80 years ago.

D-Day was a seismic undertaking - a level of planning and execution never seen before in amphibious assaults.But it was just the beginning.For 12 more weeks Allied forces would fight to expand their presence in France and liberate Paris.Nazi Germany deployed some of its strongest divisions to fight back the British and Canadians, allowing the US to break through defensive lines to the west.

25 July: US forces launch Operation Cobra from the town of St Lo, having taken it a week earlier, with the goal of breaking through German defences.30 July - 7 August: As German lines begin to crumble under pressure from US forces in the west, British troops launch Operation Bluecoat, driving the Germans back and capturing Mont Pincon, the highest point in the region.7 - 9 August: German forces launch a massive counterattack against the US, which fails.
