The scheme has supported 457 people locally, with the help of 226 host families

People who have acted as host families for Ukrainian refugees in Nottingham should be “owed a debt of gratitude”, a councillor says. The city currently manages a Homes for Ukraine programme, funded by the Government, to help those who have left their country.

“It is difficult to rent a place because people say it is too risky. That’s why the scheme here was so helpful.” During a Communities and Environment Scrutiny Committee meeting on Wednesday, June 5, the scheme was described as a success. “These people have been through really traumatic experiences.” Colin Wilderspin, interim director of communities, added: “It is a very small team that has a really wide impact on some individuals, and some complex individuals, that come to our city for different reasons.”

That year US and coalition forces withdrew from Afghanistan and the Taliban subsequently took control of all key cities, including Kabul, with some parts of the country taken by force.
