An overview of Kanye West's GOOD Fridays releases and the continued interest in the music that won't be forgotten. Is it time for an official release?

Share to linkedinIn August of 2010, Kanye West kicked off a weekly release of new music. He called it GOOD Fridays. 15 songs over 15 weeks, as the lead up to the release of It had been a little over a year since the Taylor Swift incident at the VMAs. Kanye was, for the most part, still ostracized by popular culture. His return to music, especially following the initially polarized response to his 2008 album , was something of a spectacle for fans and critics alike.

I know yall need the music so I’m dropping 1 new song every weekend until Xmas. It may be my song it may be a new Jay song etc…I’m calling it good Fridays. Yall know every Friday yall gone have a new joint from our family. We look at the game completely different now. It may be hard to recall a pre-streaming era of music, but in 2010 the digital landscape was a far cry from what it is today. Spotify wouldn't launch in the US until July of 2011. Artists weren't yet releasing projects on a discovery platform like SoundCloud. The traditional machinations of music labels still dominated. Artists handed their label a song or album, then waited for the label to do whatever the label did.

Then the songs themselves were mostly collaborative works, having anywhere from two to six artists on a track. It recalled lines from But all they got left is this guy called WestCall him Kwa-li or Kwe-li, I put him on songs with Jay-ZImagine being in 2010 and hearing there was a song with Kanye, Raekwon, and 16-year-old pop sensation Justin Bieber . Or Jay-Z and Rick Ross, huge names, are on a track with relative unknowns Nicki Minaj and indie folk rocker Bon Iver .

Today, April 18th, 2019, is Good Friday. So it wasn't surprising to see the holiday trend on Twitter. Until you realized it wasn't simply the holiday. Tracks from GOOD Fridays were being discussed en-masse."The Joy" had 55k tweets."Lord Lord Lord" 303k."Christian Dior Denim Flow" trended in the top 10 globally. GOOD Fridays has been mythologized by both fans and the media.
