Democratic presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren has identified something else to finance with her proposed wealth tax: wiping out student debt and tuition at public colleges.
"It's time to end that experiment, to clean up the mess it's caused and to do better," Warren wrote in a Medium post."We can make big structural change and create new opportunities for all Americans." Warren's wealth tax would raise an estimated $2.7 trillion over 10 years. She has previously proposed using roughly $700 billion of that money to provide universal childcare and early childhood education. In theory, that would leave nearly $1 trillion more for Warren to spend.
JohnJHarwood Liz wants my money to pay for a Doctorate Russian pyhlosophy? No thanks. My neighbor’s daughter has one from Baylor and surprisingly can’t find a job to pay back her student loan.
JohnJHarwood Eliminate the word “tax” and it’s a good plan
JohnJHarwood Makes so much sense. People shouldn't have to pay for stuff when the rich can do it for us.
JohnJHarwood Countless times I have heard parents throughout the country complain that their sons and daughters were sent to college as good Americans and returned four years later as wild-eyed radicals. The education system of this country cannot be cleansed of Communist Joe McCarthy 1952
JohnJHarwood She doesn't have $2T to give away.
JohnJHarwood That would subsidize the college tuition gravy train. You gotta make private colleges behave like responsible corporations and cut cost. How will you do that if you forgive student loans?
