Elizabeth Warren proposes a sweeping $1.25 trillion college affordability plan

, the Massachusetts Senator became the first 2020 candidate to detail a higher education plan. Her proposal is far more comprehensive than the college plans introduced by Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders in 2016.

Sanders had introduced legislation that would make tuition at public four-year college free for households with income of $125,000 or less, and community college tuition-free for everyone. Warren goes much further. The Sanders legislation gave students no help with non-tuition expenses, which can make or break a low-income person’s ability to afford college. She wants to spend $100 billion over 10 years on federal Pell grants to help with non-tuition expenses.

Critics of the plan note that it does not address a family’s net worth. A household could have substantial assets but low income and still have its debt forgiven under her plan. Beyond forgiving government debt, she proposes that the federal government work with borrowers of private student debt to provide relief, thought she does not spell out how that would work. Canceled debt would not be taxed as income.

A drunk indian for President! No I'll stick to a proven performer, Trump 2020.

Next week...the cure for cancer...

This on it's own isn't the solution. A holistic approach is needed, questions needs to be asked why the cost of higher education has jumped exponentially and inversely proportional to its quality. This is not a problem 'throwing money' at would solve.

And how will that be paid for?

Build The Wall & lots of things get more affordable and people will spend /economy booms / taxes decrease / costs go down / national debt gets paid! How is adding more debt affordable? Just kicking a can down the road so, you won’t have to deal with it now for campaign points!

If you like your college you can keep your college. Sounds familiar.

example, at 4-year institutions with open admissions policies, 32 percent of students completed a bachelor's degree within 6 years. I thought a bachelor's degree was 4 years! Then 68% drop out! That's the wasted money!

ewarren BuzzPatterson dbongino how about spending time on getting social security correct and funded for many years to come?

The only people that think this is a good idea are people who don't understand economics.

Non starter, makes headlines.

She is planning to create such amazing opportunities!!

That's a lot of wampum

God bless her soul.

Fuck no. Who does she think is gonna pay for this bs? I’m all for helping others but as long as the central bank is printing money to prop up our stock markets, why not print some and forgive a lot of that student debt instead?
