Elizabeth Warren's proposal would cancel student debt for 95% of borrowers.

The Massachusetts senator outlined her proposal inon Monday. "I'm calling for something truly transformational — the cancellation of up to $50,000 in student loan debt for 42 million Americans," she wrote.

Borrowers need not apply for the relief: The government would automatically cancel the debt of eligible borrowers, using already available income and loan data. People who earn between $100,000 and $250,000 would be eligible for less forgiveness. For example, Warren writes, "a person with household income of $130,000 gets $40,000 in cancellation, while a person with household income of $160,000 gets $30,000 in cancellation."The researchers of the analysis also found that Warren's proposal would reduce the racial wealth gap.

This is way more effective than tax cuts, because you’re directly stimulating long term demand.

Mortgage payments are hindering the middle class participation in the economy. We should forgive all outstanding mortgage debt. Throw in credit card debt also.

better yet just give every legal US citizen 100k and let them do what they want with it...LEGAL U S CITIZENS ONLY...who has WORKED!

cancel my mortgage too...oh wait I dont have one so just send me the 300k check...and make it out to cash!

what about home owners? And Back Tax ower's?

We know who would benefit. Students with useless degrees and a pile of debt. How about cover who will pay for Warren’s vote buying program?

Who pays for this ? Oh ya TAXPAYERS

It’s an empty proposal so that she get elected. It’s a trap, it is impossible to wipe out $1.4 trillion like magic. It is a empty promise. Pocahonta never paid anything bc she claimed she was an indian decent

How about 1 - 1/2048 is paid off? I mean, as long as we're joking about SenWarren...

Yea! The laws of physics, math and finance no longer apply — everything is free! Whee!!!! SafetyHelmetPolitics

This may sound stupid but those that leant the money are then never repaid or paid back by the government or we just saying you no longer have to pay? Just asking for a friend.

Can we cancel Elizabeth Warren?

And for the parents who scrimped, saved, skipped vacations, worked 2 jobs to save for their kids’ educations...nothing?

Although these two ideas have great appeal to many progressive, a closer look reveals major concerns and difficulties with both policies. 😔 Of the 42 million students, how many would really qualify for debt relief? My husband I got married early and did well, we wouldn't qualify and I imagine most young married couples wouldn't either. 'What if states decide not to “partner?” 'Would they be punished by the feds?' They could do what they want, no money from the Feds. Why look to the UK for free college? In the 60s, college costs in the USA were nominal. U. Cal. was under $1k.
