Tasmanian Budget Treasurer's 'proudest' despite going into net debt for first time in 15 years

Tasmanian Treasurer Peter Gutwein says his sixth state budget is his proudest achievement, despite forecasts that the state's net debt is set to skyrocket.Treasurer says it's a manageable level of debtLast year's Budget saw the Tasmanian Government deliver on election promises, leaving Mr Gutwein in a position to stay the course this time around.

The underlying net operating balance, which does not take into account federal government funding, is in deficit to the tune of $137.1 million. New spending on health includes $80 million to ease pressure on emergency departments and Ambulance Tasmania, and there is an additional $1.6 million in capital funding to start stage two of the Royal Hobart Hospital redevelopment.

The Budget provides new funding for an additional magistrate to be employed from 2020, and a new Supreme Court judge from 2021.Where money will need to be saved
