The call on social media for a boycott of non-Muslim products is against the interest of the country and an act of economic sabotage, says MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong .It was more important for Malaysians to support “Brand Malaysia” and all local products, he said.“Don’t shoot yourselves in the foot because Malays often make up the majority of workers.
“Let’s not hurt each other or ourselves because no rational businessmen would choose their customers based on race and religion, ” he said in a statement.He added that the timing of the move was bad as Malaysians had just celebrated National Day.“Most local products are already halal-compliant as manufacturers want to reach out to all Malaysians, ” added the Ayer Hitam MP.He said the immature move would undermine racial solidarity and should not happen in a multiracial society.
“Any product that is halal-certified, whether it is sold by Muslim or non-Muslim, is halal-compliant.“If people boycott each other, then no one can survive, ” he said here yesterday. Lau also believed that such a boycott would not only affect national unity, but also consumer rights. He called on the government to take immediate action against the responsible parties to stop the boycott.
