Christian Assembly Church is working with a debt-forgiveness nonprofit to help erase bills for 5,555 low-income households in 28 L.A. County neighborhoods

In an astounding Christmas gift, an Eagle Rock church is wiping out $5.3 million in medical debt for thousands of low-income Los Angeles area residents.

Church member Jean Kellett of Sherman Oaks said when she learned of the debt-relief plans during Sunday’s service, she wept. While the gift will have an expanded impact, it’s not the largest donation Christian Assembly Church has made. In February, the church — which was founded in 1907 and has been at the Eagle Rock address since the 1970s — delivered $1.2 million in cash to open a hospice center in Kenya.

“I love that our church is doing this. I’m especially excited for all those who will receive letters,” she said. “I can’t imagine what it will be like to get that news in the mail.” “This is what a church’s money is for — not buildings and sound systems, but actually directly helping people in need,” one person wrote on Facebook.

I will fill charity coffers as a Christmas gift. This is good business, as I would purchase Forever.

I used to live on the same block as this church. This story reflects the stories and reputation I have heard many times of their integrity and graciousness.

What a great idea — especially since you can buy old debt for pennies on the dollar. However, as a practical matter the really old debt 4 yrs. is beyond the statute of limitations and uncollectible anyway thru the court system.

Thanks to the hard working ppl that attend this church. Without you none of this happens. Unless the church has another means of income....

Awesome!!

I remember John Oliver's show doing this too.

Heat is on Joel Osteen. (That’s his self-care and grooming budget.)

Why do they have such a badass name? Are they trying to change my mind about science by appealing to the 80's action movie fan in me?

Great

A Los Angeles church is paying off $5.3 million of medical debt in its communityIn a Christmas gift to its community, a Los Angeles church is paying off $5.3 million in medical bills for more than 5,000 households. Who do people say that the Son of Man is? 'Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.' But who do you say that I am? Simon Peter replied, 'You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.' Jesus Christ, Matthew 16.13-16 That’s great. The federal government should do the same. 1cent on the dollar 💵 So generous but so sad that it’s needed. In this country. In 2019.
