His older brother Walid 'Wally' Ahmad died in a hail of bullets as he sat in a cafe in Bankstown in 2016, a cold-blooded killing that has never been solved and has been linked to the underworld shootings of at least three other men in south-western Sydney. In the aftermath of Wally's murder, Rock Ahmad took on his brother's debts while he grappled with his grief, the District Court heard on Wednesday.

In the wake of Wally's murder, police began to target his brother, searching his home, family and car, the court heard. Ahmad was in Burwood with a cousin when he received a phone call to tell him Wally had been shot dead. When his cousin started speeding towards Bankstown, Ahmad said, "Don't bother, he's dead," the District Court heard.

He made his way to a park with friends, he said, when his brothers started to ring and ask where he was.
