He said the government remains highly disciplined and has never failed to pay interest and mature debts despite having gone through a series of economic and financial recession crises.
Tengku Zafrul said prudent debt management was also implemented through existing laws, among others, Article 98 of the Federal Constitution which stipulates that the government should always prioritise debt charges over other operating expenses. Meanwhile, the Finance Minister also explained that 97 per cent of the total federal government debt is in ringgit denomination, thus reflecting prudent debt management because exposure to foreign exchange risk is minimal."Various international rating agencies such as S&P Global, Fitch and Moody’s constantly assess a country’s debt levels along with other factors such as a prudent fiscal framework, sound governance and good external position as well as economic strength,” he said.
Although country has gone through a series of economic & financial recession crises before, the gvmnt is highly disciplined & has never failed to pay interest and mature debts, the country’s fiscal position is still strong and the Federal government debt is still under control.
