'I couldn't pay my mortgage': How basketballer Liz Cambage was pushed to the limit

Australian basketball star Liz Cambage has revealed her battle to make ends meet after pushing her body past breaking point for club and country last year.

"It's funny, we make all these sacrifices for our nation, but are we really getting looked after properly at the end of the day?" Cambage said."Something that needs to be better is making sure our athletes have the right insurance claims and are protected when we're going into major tournaments and representing our countries."ahead of International Women's Day, Cambage wondered why she and other players had to push themselves beyond their limits to earn a living.

Consolation: Cambage and Rebecca Cole look dejected after their Melbourne Boomers lost the WNBL grand final. One of the biggest names in world basketball, Cambage burst back into the public eye 18 months ago after returning from almost a year out of the game following the Rio Olympics. But after 11 months of continuous basketball and two seasons worth about $100,000 each, Cambage still felt compelled to top up her income with a seven-figure contract with the Women’s Chinese Basketball Association.

"I haven't made any money since September, which has been interesting. It's made me value the dollar a whole lot more. Everything's a learning lesson. The universe works in mysterious ways and she's taught me a big lesson."

The worlds full of people struggling to meet their mortgage. Where’s their story? This type of woe is me journalism is really pathetic.

Really... for someone who was drafted 1 in and was before the draft saying I don't want to go to certain teams? You could of had the best health care and still payer national basketball. Your a free lance basketball player.... take your lumps for your career decisions.

Have you ever heard of income insurance ?

First world problems, get a normal job then.

Happens to others than just her, though. It's called life. Don't buy shit you can't afford.

Sorry i’m confused . Can you please clarify. Her last overseas contract was 2016, but she played in the US in 2018.

$200k in two years.., probably club drs, physio, food, sponsored clothing? Ye that is a struggle

More and more people are finding that so unfortunately!

There are many limits, but this ain’t one...
