Last month the Government said it would have to consult the Central Bank to see if it was comfortable with more money provided and to assess what impact that would have on the housing market and the public finances

The watchdog has carried out a preliminary assessment of the Rebuilding Ireland Home Loan Scheme which offered loans to people who were turned down by banks of building societies.But last month local authorities were told not to take any more applications because the €200m allocated had run out.

RTÉ News has learned that the Central Bank has carried out a "preliminary assessment" which was discussed at its Financial Stability Group.
