Twenty-one state attorneys general say the Education Department is refusing to release student loan information needed to protect residents from abusive student loan servicing.

Maryland Attorney General Brian E. Frosh joined 20 other state attorneys in urging the U.S. Education Department to provide student loan data needed to enforce consumer protection laws.

“Federal loans are federal assets and therefore must be controlled and regulated by the federal government,” Hill said. The attorneys general say the Education Department never formally provided a reason for no longer disclosing the data or consulted with the affected state and federal agencies. The attorneys general first raised the issue with the department in July, but say their concerns were ignored. Halting the flow of information to state authorities impedes law enforcement from “protecting the students the department exists to serve,” the letter said.

“Congress also gave to the department the authority to contract with and supervise its student loan servicers and made them responsible to the department,” Hill said. “A piecemeal, state-by-state approach to regulating federal assets causes confusion for borrowers, makes administration of the loan program more complicated and costly, and thwarts Congress’ goals that the program be administered at the federal level.

cheryl38635012 Why is student loan information the business of any law enforcement agency? Any information that a law enforcement agency needs is readily available to the public is all they need. All other information is private and no business of the law. What next? Your health info? Taxes?

This is dumb 🤣🤣🤣

Maryland AG Brian Frosh would be even more admirable and more of a justice advocate if he would also turn his attention to the wrongful conviction of Adnan Syed and an investigation into the actual killer of Hae Min Lee.

That should tell his military they can't trust Trump

realDonaldTrump likely trying to figure out how he can financially capitalize from student debt.

.realDonaldTrump admin is not just tipping the scales for Corporate America and 1%, it's toppling them, slashing federal protections; it's the death by a 1000 cuts. Education Dept is now withholding information from states, cutting their ability to oversee student load agencies.

What,credit scores?

Not surprising.

Corruption amd we can't depend on the US Justice Department because they are now corrupt with that damn report.

The obstruction & destruction just never ends in this hideous administration. I want the full Mueller report, the sooner the better. I hope the obstruction of justice trump perpetrated is as close to indictable as possible & so vile that even 20 GOP Senators agree to impeach.

That's because no one in the Adminstration knows the burdens of being saddled with years and years and years of student loan debt.

Is there a place that I could submit my student loans that I have been paying since 2005 as evidence?

Off the stage WP. You bombed.

Does this guy have any thing else better to do than ride Trump’s jock? Maybe he should focus on Baltimore for a while - signed, Maryland taxpayer
