The Department for Work and Pensions has released new data showing that 6.7 million people across Scotland, England, and Wales are currently receiving Universal Credit. This means-tested benefit is designed to assist those who are unemployed or on a low income with their daily living expenses.
The DWP's telephony systems ensure that legitimate calls appear as 0800 numbers or unknown numbers. The DWP is urging claimants not to ignore calls from unknown numbers if they have received a message in their online account, as it is likely to be from them. However, to help claimants verify the caller's identity, the DWP has stated that it will "ensure that you know the call is genuine".
