Southeast Asia has declared its interest in hosting the 2034 World Cup, but while the details of the bid remain unclear, there are already questions that need answering about the number of automatic bids for the 10 potential ASEAN hosts

At this stage, the biggest question is whether the hosts should qualify automatically if the bid is successful. When the World Cup has been held by a single country—or even two countries, as in 2002—the hosts have qualified automatically. But with multiple host nations, this becomes problematic. With United 2026, at least the U.S. and Mexico would be expected to take two of the six CONCACAF slots, so having three co-hosts wouldn’t have too much of a negative impact on the rest of the confederation.
